font and colour testing

Lighthousefellowship by Ella Bertrand
This was a font I created myself to help work out the initial style of the magazine I wanted to create. I liked the messy hand made style that fits with the genre.

My mood board

MADE ON ROOM STYLER MOOD BOARDS.

My Models

These are my conformation emails to the band asking for their permission to photograph them.

My final models are:

Andre Christie:

Age-16, Reading School

Ben Iddon:

Age-16, Reading School

Andrew Prowse:

Age-17,Reading School

Tom Wheately:

Age-16, Reading School

Why I have chosen these models:
These boys are all in a pop punk band which fits with the theme of alternative and punk music magazine  . Due to them being teenagers themselves it encourages the teenage audience. The clothes that they  wear will inspire the reader base so they will be wearing trendy and alternative clothes.

Why these models are suitable:
These models are suitable as they are young and fun, they have a mix of styles and make it easy for the viewer to see they just want to 'have a laugh' together and with the views which is what the band as a whole wishes to show. However they do look like intelligent and well behaved boys making the views role models not only fun and good looking but hard working and intelligent, inspiring teenagers who might otherwise go down the wrong path.

Evaluation

Evaluation

I feel that this task went quite well but was rushed towards the end. For my next task i will look more in detail at everything and spend longer on the final product and product testing. I feel i was strongest at the begining when i was less rushed.

Draft designs/ mock ups
This is my idea as to where everything will go on my magazine.
This is the text on top of the image, the black does not work so i will change it to white or another brighter colour.

Questionnaire + Responses

Questionnaire + Responses

From my responses you can see that 56% of questionnaire responses were from women. 60% of the questionnaire responses were from over 18 year olds- due to this it could effect what different age groups want to see different things on a school magazine. 60% of people wanted to see information about academics followed by information on the arts. However i have had some other ideas suggested. People decided the most appropriate amount of images was 3 on the front cover, they then decided only a little bit of text as a brief outline should be used.

Contents analysis

Student magazine contents

A

Source A is an effective contents page due to having bright but minimal colours, key content ideas and key images to show what you are going to read in the magazine. By having the social media bars it shows that the magazine is current and up to date increasing popularity. Having a grey scale title diverts your eyes from it making the contents the most important due to it being the contents page.

B
Source B is very clean cut and grown up. The minimal colour creates an organised and sophisticated mood. Having the school logo helps to make it seem very formal

Student Magazine Front Cover Analysis

   Student Magazine Research/ Analysis
Student magazines differ between the age group targeted. For very young audience it is more targeted to the parents making the magazine simple and crisp with the headlines so they know what they are going to be reading. However magazines aimed at primary school children aged 8-10 tend to be very bright, engaging and have lost of images with the 'must have' items to buy. However when the children start to get older it begins to become more simple and bold with less colours.
Source 1

Source 1 shows a very clean and simple cover with one image. It has a very clear title and extremely minimal but important texts. The use of the black board background on the image created a good space for text and the text was then cleverly made into a chalk effect font, linking it to the whole image. There are very few colours which complement eachother but make it seem very smart and grown up. The girl in the class room indicates what the magazine will be about, having books and a bag to show the school essentials. They have largened key words making them bold and drawing your attention to them. The only coloured text is the title which is drawing you attention to it and making it the most important thing.

Source 2
Source 2 shows a bright and exciting cover using lots of photographic techniques. Everything is colour coordinated. It does however only have the title which isn't greatly informing us of the content. The use of the enlarged "arts" helps to quickly signify what the magazine is about.

Source 3
Source 3 shows a mid shot of a child holding apples, these apples represent school, teaching and the start of the school year. The child smiling shows that the child is enjoying school. Having the boy wearing blue and then a blue title ties it all together. By then adding the bright yellow circle with black text it is then drawing the reader into that pin point of 'free stuff'. By including the main headlines of the magazine it is encouraging people to read it due to them knowing what is on the inside.

Initial Ideas

Preliminary Task

  Task

    Initial Ideas

For my school magazine task I think that I may include a photo of someone in uniform with accessorise and books talking about the must have accessories of the year. I will also include healthy school snack and lunch ideas. My magazine will be for secondary to sixth form students helping them start the new term. it will have main headlines and a large title. It will have a minimalistic colour for professionalism.

Another idea is that I make a school art magazine giving ideas to art students showing new techniques and artists giving a free art product every time. Its cover would be an arty picture of students all holding cameras ect. The image would be colourful but the text would be all one colour. It will be aimed at sixth form students who are doing very fine art or photography.
